Indian Chiefs “Earn” More Than Canada’s Prime Minister

According to recent information obtained by the Canadian Taxpayers Federation it turns out that many aboriginal politicians in Canada make substantial amounts of money (news here).

The statistics shows that 222 Indian chiefs and counsellors all across Canada receive more money than the Premiers in their provinces. And with 82 of them, the situation is even rosier – their income exceeds the salary of Stephen Harper.

If you think that the information was readily available and transparent as is the case with the other politicians in Canada, you will be wrong. The most interesting thing about the numbers is that it took the Federation over a year of repeated requests to get the salary amounts from the Department of Indian Affairs.

It’s no wonder, because bringing that information to the public hurts the traditional image of the Natives of Canada as perennial martyrs who still suffer the White Man’s evil.

In a very blatant example of misuse of money, a certain chief in the Maritimes, who presides over a community of 304 people, has received $978,000 tax free.

When facts like these are made public, the usual reaction of the Natives is that we shouldn’t meddle into their affairs, because they are sovereign nations.

Well, that would have been justified, if the Natives acted as sovereign nations, getting their income from their own enterprises operating in their lands. And they have plenty of them, despite the claims that they need even more land, and yet no businesses have been developed there.

So when a “sovereign” nation receives 96% of its income from Canada’s taxes, its affairs become Canadian taxpayers’ issue as well.

The Natives receive billions of dollars every year and they have very little to show for that money. Their local governments are either unwilling or incapable to resolve their problems. And there are plenty of them: alcoholism, suicides, child abuse, high crime, heavy drug use, etc., etc.

Those communities are totally self-ruling, other than throwing plenty of money at them, the different levels of the Canadian government have no say on how the funds are spent. The information about the overpaid chiefs sheds some light on what the root of the problem is.

Frankly, the situation is far from unique – every time you give money to a group of people to do nothing, the most “enterprising” of them will take control of the money. The case of Arafat comes to mind – he squandered hundreds of millions of dollars, which were supposed to help Palestinians.

So maybe the whole that “sovereignty” experiment doesn’t work. Why don’t the Natives start earning their living like everybody else in Canada and pay taxes?

Or if they still want their “independence”, why don’t they outsource their government to Canada? At least the Canadian politicians steal far less than the chiefs… Then the ordinary Natives will be able to keep much more money that they do now.
