Olivia Chow and the Porn Actress

The end of our civilization as we know it

The other day I found out that my MP Olivia Chow had acquired a bold new look. One of her union admirers posted on Twitter a picture of the socialist diva in full Caribana gear at the notorious Caribbean parade in Toronto (h/t BCF).

Just after my shock and horror wore off, I was hit with another shocking news. It turned out the rumoured biopic of her late husband Jack Layton wasn’t just a rumour anymore.  CBC notified us that not only will they spend our tax money on that monstrosity, but they also had selected the actors.

It appears that Olivia’s role will be played by Sook-Yin Lee, a Korean-Canadian (can I say that?) actress, who was a TV personality and a DJ. However, she is best known for her role of Sophia in the movie Shortbus. Now, that was a porn movie, pure and simple, with quite a lot of explicit sex (both straight and queer). They added a few heart-breaking story lines to the sex, so I guess the producers would be offended if somebody calls their movie pornography.

I have nothing against sex movies – porn is perfectly legal in Canada – and Sook-Yin Lee’s part-time porn escapades obviously contributed to her career. What seems disturbing is the fact that a porn actress is going to play the role of a sitting Member of the Parliament, who on top of that occupies a high position in the NDP hierarchy. But judging from Olivia’s Caribana picture, she is getting used to the idea to loosen up.

Maybe we need to loosen up the memory of Jack as well. Wouldn’t it be fitting if they cast Ron Jeremy in his role? Nah, Ron Jeremy is too fat and too straight. It would be better if they cast some of the gay actors from Shortbus. After all, that is going to be a great tribute to Jack’s contributions to the homosexual community.

After he died, Xtra (Toronto’s gay rag) published an obituary. They found it very important to say that in 1985-1991 he helped save the bathhouses (something like gay whorehouses) in his capacity of a chairman of Toronto’s Board of Health. They quoted him:

“We had calls at the time for closing the bathhouses and talking about abstinence and absolutely not handing out condoms. So we went on a very active campaign specifically to hand out condoms and to make sure that public education was going on in the bathhouses.”

It’s so touching to imagine Jack cruising the bathhouses handing out condoms like Santa Claus. Later he lost his interest in those establishments and switched to massage parlours with real (I hope so) women, which he fondly referred to as “community clinics”.

It is so ridiculous that CBC is going to spend millions of dollars immortalizing a third-rate politician and his wife, whose only accomplishment had been the invention of more and more creative methods of mooching from the taxpayers’ money for the benefit of themselves and their cronies.

Only in the ridiculous political “reality” of the Canadian Left a ridiculous man like “Smilin’ Jack” could become a national hero.
